چکیده

What semiotic potential resides in a 3D virtual environment? This paper accounts for some system features of a Norwegian virtual world, Patagonia, which is part of the 3D Render Ware based ActiveWorlds. It is argued that these features constitute a semiotic resource in interplay with language. The paper suggests visual semiotics as an additional framework to discourse studies of computer-mediated communication. The term “multimodality” is useful for the recognition of coexistent semiotic modes. Case studies of system features and praxis among experienced users reveal a complex spectrum of semiotic modes in use in Patagonia. Available modes and praxis in a society constitute a “semiotic landscape”. Different communication modes are visually represented by a color system. Nonverbal communication is enabled. 3D graphics support the perception of an actual community or “world”, although located in virtual reality. In closing, the paper stipulates some ethical and methodological issues.

Cooperative Ants Approach for a 2D Navigational Map of 3D Virtual Scene

The problem of intelligent agent navigation in virtual environment is the subject of many recent AI researches. Although many solutions have been proposed for these, the ever-growing complexity of virtual environments inhabited by sophisticated characters makes it necessary to further elaborate computational models used for building such a navigational map. In this paper we propose a cooperativ...

Design of a 3D Navigation Technique Supporting VR Interaction

Multimodality is a powerful paradigm to increase the realness and the easiness of the interaction in Virtual Environments (VEs). In particular, the search for new metaphors and techniques for 3D interaction adapted to the navigation task is an important stage for the realization of future 3D interaction systems that support multimodality, in order to increase efficiency and usability. In this p...

3D Inhabited Virtual Worlds: Interactivity and Interaction between Avatars, Autonomous Agents, and Users

This paper addresses some of the central questions currently related to 3-Dimensional Inhabited Virtual Worlds (3D-IVWs), their virtual interactions, and communication, drawing from the theory and methodology of sociology, interaction analysis, interpersonal communication, semiotics, cultural studies, and media studies. First, 3D-IVWs--seen as a new and unique form of multimedia--are introduced...
